I'm Rose.
As an educator in US schools, I know that serving multilingual students in a prominent monolingual setting and system is challenging AND very time consuming!!
Out of all the languages I speak, my heritage language still means the most to me. It connects me with those who have gone before me and passed down the values and traditions of my Mennonite heritage.
Join me in The Multilingual Lab where I support you with individualized plans in learning English, Spanish, Russian, and Plautdietsch.

My language learning journey
English -
My first experience as a ‘newcomer’ began in kindergarten. We spoke German at home, so my academic year started out with me speaking limited English. I remember hesitating to speak , and I spent a lot of time watching those around me. My report card at the end of the year stated that I needed to listen to more English stories to build my vocabulary.
Spanish -
My family moved from Canada to Paraguay during my 5th grade school year, and my academic language changed all over again. This time it was Spanish.
If I had known then what I know now about language learning, I would have been less anxious, and I would’ve used resources to help advance myself in speaking Spanish.But, I was a 5th grader trying to stay above water with nobody able to help guide me in learning Spanish. I felt like I was sinking most of the time.
Academics had come easy to me so I expected myself to move along just as I had before, but the iceberg of language and culture kept that from happening.
Russian -
Soon after we were married, my husband and I (and two toddlers) moved to Russia. Learning a new language as an adult allowed me to process and analyze my younger 'newcomer' experiences from another perspective.
Not only was this 'healing' to me, but it also gave me a chance to see what works when it comes to learning a new language.
We had been in the country for about half a year and were attending a small language school with teachers who gave us great feedback on our progress. One of the exercises we did boosted my recall in speaking Russian that I still refer to that as my 'AHA' moment in learning languages strategically.

When you make this your routine, you will pave the way for successful language learning in the future. Your example will provide exposure and success to those you serve during this phase of life; your students in your classroom or the young ones in the car on the go.

Give Your Kids the Advantage
When we lived in Russia, our kids had the prime opportunity to learn the language. Our kids started trans-language from the get-go. They spoke with the nanny in Russian, and when they wanted something from me, it would come out in either language.
Since then, our kids have stopped speaking Russian, but having been exposed to the sounds of the language at an early age gave them the advantage of learning new languages at a quicker rate.
Our oldest began speaking Spanish as he managed various work teams. When I hear him speaking, I don’t hear an accent. His brain is transferring the sounds from when he was a toddler 25 years ago.
Community and Co-working
The community of Everyday Language Learners learning Spanish is growing because many are seeing the demographics changing within their communities. It’s always better to learn together and hear from other language learners. That’s what we aim for with our members, and that’s what will move you forward in speaking Spanish.
